The Major National Science and Technology Infrastructure Project
High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility
On December 31st,2015, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF),major national scientific and technological infrastructure, gets approved from National Development and Reform Commission.
HIAF, according to Medium- and Long-term Plan for Building of Major National Scientific and Technological Infrastructure issued by The State Council of the People's Republic of China, is one of sixteen infrastructures, arranged in prioritizing position to construct during the period of the 12th Five-year Plan.
Since 2009, Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences has proposed the concept of HIAF (High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility), kept optimizing its design and performs research on several key technology in advance. Meanwhile, personnel concerned have started the long and tough mission on selecting location for the project all over the nation. Finally, the location was confirmed -- a southeast coastal area in Huidong county, Huizhou, Guangdong Province. In June of 2014, Chinese Academy of Sciences signs the framework agreement on co-construction of HIAF Guangdong Provincial government. HIAF officially settls in Huizhou, Guangdong Province.
HIAF will build a heavy-ion accelerator facility for comprehensive research at an international leading level with the ability of generating nuclide extremely far from stability. HIAF is composed of high-intensity superconduction ion source, high-intensity superconducting ion linac, intensifier ring, Spectrometer Ring for High-precision Experiments, Low Energy Nuclear Structure Spectrometer, Dielectron Recombination Spectrometer, radioactive ion beam line, External Target Terminal and supporting facilities.
The legal entity of HIAF is Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the cooperation unit is Peking University. The project has an investment of RMB 1,501.37 million (including RMB 50 million from Chinese Academy of Sciences). Guangdong Provincial government is responsible for the construction of supporting facilities, and the construction period is 7 years.
The construction of HIAF will create international leading conditions for basic research of nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics, provide advanced experimental platform for heavy ion beam application research and supply theoretical, methodological, technical and talent resource for nuclear energy development, nuclear safety and nuclear technology application.
